“Soul Works”

“My Soul Works portion of this website is a dedication to a collection of paintings I have slowly and fruitfully put together. Much of my art began as small doodles—tucked in notebooks, on plane tickets, Post-its—given as gifts, lost, and sometimes found again.

Some pieces, like Source Energy I,  took some lost time. I stared at a blank canvas for the better half of a year, joking that it was my TV—until inspiration decided to strike one night. My artist uncle tells me to let the doodles and natural forms come out like weeds, to keep studying, to let them grow and begin to focus. It’s hard to do that. Yet somehow, they all end up living in the same ornate, whimsical world of color.

Drawing and painting are difficult for me. I want to enter into the background, to sculpt out whatever is there, vigorously, unapologetically —but how do you do that when there is nothing? Sometimes I’ll doodle, and a bird or flower evolves, something I hadn’t thought of before. It becomes a grueling process of choosing where to place the next dot.

I am inspired by the natural world around me—

the movement of the ocean,

patterns in rocks and animals

the curious shapes of the mountains

colors of celestial movement

the emotions carried through weather

I am also inspired by my family and friends

and of course in between all that, the pure strokes of luck.

The reason I use so many mediums is because I’m drawn to texture and to the challenge of working across them. I love seeing how materials interact with each other, and how others experience my pieces. We all see and have different experiences in this world, and by chance we get to interact.

Thank you for seeing my art through your own unique perspective.
